Rivian initially planned to produce the R2 at a new Georgia factory, but those plans were delayed to 2028. Instead, the R2 will be built at Rivian's existing plant in Normal, Illinois, which is being expanded to allow for an annual production capacity of 215,000 vehicles, with 155,000 potentially being R2s. The company has already begun manufacturing validation builds at the Normal plant. The R2 line-up includes a Performance model (available this spring), a Premium trim (late 2026), and a Standard trim (late 2027). The Performance version will have 656 horsepower and can go from 0 to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds. The Standard model, with a single motor, will have 350 hp and is estimated to achieve 345 miles of range. Rivian unveiled the R2 in March 2024, alongside the smaller R3 compact SUV. The R2 is designed as a more affordable, compact alternative to the R1S. Rivian aims to deliver between 20,000 and 25,000 vehicles in 2026.
