Aritzia Acquires Retail Brand Fred Segal

Fashion retailer Aritzia has acquired the Fred Segal brand, a well-known West Coast retail name. The deal signals continued consolidation in the premium retail segment. Such acquisitions often lead to exclusive collaboration capsules, which can generate overstock and create future sourcing opportunities for the off-price channel.

- The financial terms of the acquisition have not been disclosed, but the deal includes Fred Segal's intellectual property, and trademarks, and the lease for its original flagship location at 8100 Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles. - Aritzia's CEO, Jennifer Wong, has stated the company plans to restore the iconic Melrose store, which was damaged in a recent storm, and transform it into an "experiential destination." - This is Aritzia's second major brand acquisition, following the purchase of premium athletic wear brand Reigning Champ, which was a move to accelerate its entry into menswear. - Fred Segal, founded in 1961, was a pioneer of the "California cool" aesthetic and experiential retail, popularizing the shop-in-shop concept and launching many notable brands like Juicy Couture and Hard Candy Cosmetics. - In the years leading up to the acquisition, Fred Segal faced significant challenges, closing its Sunset Boulevard and Malibu stores in 2024 and ultimately shuttering its final two clothing stores in July of the same year. - The acquisition is part of Aritzia's broader U.S. expansion strategy, as the U.S. is its largest growth market. The company sees the potential for as many as 200 stores in the United States. - Aritzia purchased the brand from Fred Segal Family LLC, with the brand's licensing previously represented by Global Icons.
