AI Security Startup Hardshell Raises $1.1M

Hardshell, a startup developing AI security for the defense industry, has raised $1.1 million in funding. The investment indicates a growing focus on creating trustworthy and data-centric artificial intelligence within the aerospace and defense sectors.

- Hardshell's founding team brings direct experience from the defense sector; co-founders Hunter Moore and Andrew Schoka are former DOD cybersecurity and AI experts. Moore holds a PhD in Systems Engineering focused on AI security and was an AI subject matter expert at the DOD CDAO, while Schoka is a former U.S. Army Cyber Officer with an MBA and an MS in Cybersecurity. - The company's technology is model-agnostic, designed to secure the entire AI stack, including large language models (LLMs), computer vision, and natural language processing (NLP) systems. It focuses on protecting datasets before model training to prevent threats like data poisoning, data leakage, and risks from synthetic content. - The pre-seed funding round included participation from several venture capital firms, such as VTC Ventures, Front Porch Venture Partners, Blu Ventures, and MoJo Ventures. - Hardshell's approach differs from many AI security tools by focusing on "upstream" threat protection for the data used to train AI models, rather than monitoring models after they are deployed. - The global AI in the military market was valued at $9.31 billion in 2024 and is projected to grow to $27.97 billion by 2033. Cybersecurity is the fastest-growing application within this market. - Hardshell participated in multiple accelerator programs, including the Batten Institute i.Lab Incubator, the Starburst National Landing Launchpad, Lighthouse Network, and the 434 Accelerator. - The shift in military strategy from platform-centric to data-centric warfare underscores the need for secure AI, as the effectiveness of autonomous systems and command decisions depends on the integrity of the underlying data.
