Carbon Promotes New CTO
Manufacturing technology company Carbon announced the promotion of Jason Rolland to the role of Chief Technology Officer. Dr. Rolland has been with the company for over 12 years and will now lead its technology and product development strategy.
- Before his promotion, Dr. Rolland served as the Senior Vice President of Materials and was one of Carbon's earliest employees. He is a co-inventor of the company's patented dual-cure resin platform, a key component of its material offerings. - Rolland has a history of entrepreneurship, having co-founded Liquidia Technologies (NASDAQ:LQDA) before his tenure at Carbon. His academic background is in polymer science, and he earned his Ph.D. under Carbon's co-founder, Joseph DeSimone. - As a prolific inventor, Rolland holds over 60 issued U.S. patents and has another 45 pending, contributing significantly to Carbon's intellectual property in the additive manufacturing space. - Carbon's core technology, Digital Light Synthesis™ (DLS™), enables the rapid production of parts from liquid resins by using light and oxygen. This technology is utilized across various industries, including automotive, dental, and consumer goods. - The company has raised approximately $742 million over nine funding rounds, with a valuation of $2.4 billion reported in June 2019. Its most recent funding round in November 2025 brought in $60 million to help the company scale its production capacity. - As of late 2025, Carbon was reportedly cash-flow breakeven and expected to pursue an Initial Public Offering (IPO) within 12 to 24 months. - High-profile partnerships have been a hallmark of Carbon's strategy, including collaborations with Adidas to produce 3D-printed midsoles for its 4DFWD running shoes and with Riddell for customized football helmet liners. - Carbon operates on a subscription-based model, positioning itself as a solutions provider that works closely with customers on application development rather than just selling equipment.
