Turnstile Covers Stone Roses Classic
American hardcore band Turnstile delivered a live cover of The Stone Roses' iconic "I Wanna Be Adored" for the "Like A Version" series. Their energetic, riff-driven style reinvented the original's ethereal Manchester sound for contemporary audiences.
The original "I Wanna Be Adored" was the opening track on The Stone Roses' seminal 1989 self-titled debut album. The song, with its iconic bassline and brooding intro, became an anthem for the "Madchester" scene, blending indie rock with psychedelic and dance elements. Turnstile's choice of cover reflects their own genre-defying trajectory. Originating as a hardcore punk band from Baltimore, their 2021 album "Glow On" received critical acclaim and three Grammy nominations. Their latest album, 2025's "Never Enough," saw them win Grammys for Best Metal Performance and Best Rock Album, making them the first band nominated in rock, alternative, and metal categories in the same year. The cover was performed for Australian radio station Triple J's long-running "Like a Version" series, which began in 2004. The segment invites musicians to play one of their own songs and a cover of another artist's track, with some covers, like The Wiggles' take on "Elephant," going on to top Australia's Hottest 100 poll. Vocalist Brendan Yates called the Stone Roses track "one of my favorite songs of all time," describing it as "unconventional and simple and very just beautiful." Guitarist Meg Mills added that the performance was also a tribute to the late Stone Roses bassist Gary "Mani" Mounfield, who passed away in November 2025. While Turnstile has a history of performing covers from bands like Bad Brains and Minor Threat live, they have not typically recorded them. Yates noted this was a different experience, allowing them to formally lay the track down in a studio setting. For their original song in the session, the band performed "SUNSHOWER" from their 2025 album. Yates explained they chose it specifically to showcase a sound from the "opposite end of the spectrum from the cover."
