AI Mega-Deals Drive Record Startup Funding

Global startup funding hit a record-breaking $189 billion in February, but the cash is highly concentrated. A staggering 83% of the total went to just three AI companies, led by OpenAI's historic $110 billion round. The trend signals massive investor conviction in foundational AI models but raises risk for smaller startups struggling to attract capital.

The record-breaking $110 billion raised by OpenAI was led by strategic investors, not traditional venture capitalists. Amazon committed $50 billion, while Nvidia and SoftBank each invested $30 billion, signaling a new trend of "compute-backed financing" where investments are tied to infrastructure use. The other two AI giants that captured the lion's share of February's funding were Anthropic and xAI. Anthropic, developer of the Claude chatbot, raised $30 billion in a Series G round, boosting its valuation to $380 billion. This deal was led by GIC and Coatue, with participation from firms like D.E. Shaw and Founders Fund. Elon Musk's xAI also secured a massive $20 billion in a Series E funding round in the first week of 2026. The company, known for its Grok chatbot, attracted a wide range of investors including Valor Equity Partners, Stepstone Group, and Fidelity. This intense concentration of capital in just three companies highlights a significant disparity in the startup ecosystem. While AI-related startups accounted for 90% of all venture funding in February, seed-stage funding for other sectors dropped by about 11% compared to the previous year. The structure of these mega-deals is as important as their size. A large portion of the investments from Amazon and Nvidia into OpenAI is expected to be in the form of services and cloud computing credits rather than cash. This arrangement creates a strategic loop where the investors are also the primary suppliers of the crucial infrastructure these AI companies need to operate. The valuations of these AI frontrunners are now on par with some of the largest publicly traded companies in the world. OpenAI's latest round valued it at $840 billion post-money, while Anthropic stands at $380 billion. Both companies are reportedly considering Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) later in 2026.
