Amazon Web Services and OpenAI said on April 28 that OpenAI’s latest models and the Codex coding agent are now available in limited preview on Amazon Bedrock. (aws.amazon.com) (openai.com) Bedrock is Amazon’s managed platform for using outside artificial intelligence models without wiring each application to a separate provider. AWS said customers can now access GPT-5.5 and GPT-5.4 through the same Bedrock tools they already use for model access, fine-tuning and orchestration. (aws.amazon.com 1) (aws.amazon.com 2) Codex is OpenAI’s coding agent, a tool that can write, edit and run software tasks on a developer’s behalf. OpenAI said organizations can configure Codex to use models served from Bedrock, with AWS handling processing, billing and availability. (openai.com 1) (openai.com 2) AWS paired the model launch with Managed Agents powered by OpenAI, another limited preview announced at its “What’s Next with AWS” event on April 28. AWS said the service is designed for developers building agents that take multiple steps, use tools and keep work moving inside Bedrock. (aws.amazon.com 1) (aws.amazon.com 2) The timing followed a separate shift in OpenAI’s relationship with Microsoft. Reuters reported the AWS launch came one day after OpenAI loosened ties with its longtime backer, allowing broader cloud distribution of its products. (reuters.com) That changes where large companies can buy OpenAI systems. Instead of going through Microsoft Azure alone, AWS customers with existing Bedrock deployments can add OpenAI models inside the same procurement, governance and security setup they already use. (aws.amazon.com) (openai.com) AWS said eligible customers can count Codex usage toward their existing AWS cloud commitments. OpenAI said customer data is processed by Amazon Bedrock, a detail aimed at companies that want OpenAI models without leaving Amazon’s cloud controls. (openai.com) (aws.amazon.com) The companies had already been working together on agent infrastructure. In February, OpenAI announced a stateful runtime environment for agents in Amazon Bedrock, built to give long-running agents memory, orchestration and secure execution on AWS. (openai.com) The April 28 launch turns that partnership into a storefront decision for enterprise buyers: OpenAI’s newest models, its coding agent and agent-building tools now sit inside Amazon’s Bedrock catalog, even as Microsoft remains a major OpenAI partner.
