Sony's New Earbuds Receive Unanimous Praise
Sony has launched its WF-1000XM6 wireless earbuds, which have garnered what podcast hosts call an "unusually unanimous positive reception" across the tech media. The new model features an 11% slimmer design, best-in-class noise cancellation, and eight microphones for enhanced voice clarity, highlighting the value of iterative, user-focused product improvements.
- The WF-1000XM6 incorporates a new HD Noise Cancelling Processor, the QN3e, and an Integrated Processor V2, which enables 32-bit audio processing for the first time in the series, an upgrade from the 24-bit processing in the WF-1000XM5. This dual-processor system is designed to provide a 25% improvement in noise cancellation over the previous model, particularly targeting mid-to-high frequency sounds like voices and city noise. - For improved call quality, each earbud now contains two microphones and a bone conduction sensor, which work with an AI-based noise reduction algorithm to precisely capture the user's voice, even in noisy environments. - The earbuds feature a newly developed 8.4mm driver unit, named Dynamic Driver X, which has a diaphragm combining different materials for the dome and edge to deliver deeper bass and clearer high frequencies. - From a sustainability perspective, the earbuds are constructed with up to 25% recycled plastics in a circular material approach, and the packaging is plastic-free. - Battery life remains the same as the predecessor, offering up to 8 hours of playback with ANC enabled, and a total of 24 hours with the charging case. The case supports both USB-C and Qi wireless charging. - Connectivity is upgraded with Bluetooth LE Audio support for lower latency, which is beneficial for gaming and video, and the internal wireless antenna is 1.5 times larger than the one in the WF-1000XM5 for a more stable connection. - The physical design has been altered to be more ergonomic, with a shape that follows the inner ear's natural curves and a new ventilation structure to reduce pressure and internal noises. The earbuds also have an IPX4 rating for splash resistance. - In addition to supporting high-resolution audio codecs like LDAC, the companion Sound Connect app now offers a 10-band customizable equalizer, an upgrade from the previous 5-band EQ.
