The World Architecture Community has opened its 53rd Cycle of the WA Awards for voting. The competition offers a platform for architects and students to gain international recognition, with participation often seen as a valuable way to boost a portfolio and showcase design work.
The WA Awards are structured into three main submission categories: Realized, Designed, and Student. This format provides distinct platforms for established professionals showcasing built work, conceptual projects, and academic designs, with past winners including major firms like Zaha Hadid Architects. For internships at top-tier firms, a curated portfolio of five to six of your best projects is more effective than a comprehensive collection. A design manager at Gensler emphasizes showcasing a combination of strong design sensibilities and technical documentation skills, demonstrating an idea's journey from concept to buildable detail. Proficiency in specific software is non-negotiable for major corporate firms. Revit is the dominant Building Information Modeling (BIM) software for large-scale projects in North America, while Rhino and its Grasshopper plugin are essential for complex forms and data-driven parametric design. A significant trend in commercial architecture is biophilic design, which integrates natural elements like plants, water, and natural light into the built environment. This approach is proven to reduce employee stress, enhance creativity, and improve cognitive function. The push for sustainability is also driving a focus on net-zero buildings, a market expected to grow from nearly 500 buildings globally in 2023 to over 78,000 by 2032. This involves using recycled and low-carbon materials, such as mass timber, and designing for climate to reduce operational energy use for heating and cooling. Locally, the Playa Vista community serves as a case study in large-scale sustainable urban development, dedicating 70% of its land to parks and open space. It is considered a model for innovative infill, blending residential, commercial, and retail spaces while integrating extensive environmental and energy-saving measures.
