Starlink expands in‑flight
SpaceX’s Starlink is live in more than 150 countries with over 11 million subscribers and is being used for in‑flight Wi‑Fi, ship and train connectivity as well as disaster and conflict communications. Virgin Atlantic will start flying with Starlink internet in May, moving up a rollout that had previously been slated to begin later in 2026. (virginatlantic.com) The airline said on April 12 that its Airbus A350 fleet will lead the installation program, with the first customer flight scheduled for early May as VS153 from London Heathrow to New York John F. Kennedy International Airport. Virgin Atlantic said all Airbus A350 aircraft should be connected by early summer. (virginatlantic.com) Virgin Atlantic said Boeing 787 installations will begin in the second half of 2026, and the airline expects about two-thirds of its fleet to have Starlink by the end of 2026. Airbus A330neo installations are planned to finish in 2027, when Virgin Atlantic expects full-fleet coverage. (virginatlantic.com) Starlink works through thousands of low-Earth-orbit satellites, which fly much closer to Earth than older geostationary satellites. That shorter distance cuts delay, or latency, and helps keep service working over oceans and remote regions where aircraft often lose traditional connections. (starlink.com) SpaceX says Starlink Aviation now offers downloads of 135 to 310 megabits per second per terminal, latency below 99 milliseconds, and service on more than 200,000 flights so far. The company says its laser-linked satellite network is designed to keep aircraft connected even far from ground stations. (starlink.com) Virgin Atlantic first announced the deal in July 2025, calling itself the first United Kingdom airline to commit to free, fleet-wide Starlink service. The airline said the service will be free for Flying Club members rather than sold as a separate onboard package. (virginatlantic.com; pax-intl.com) Airlines are moving quickly because passenger expectations have changed from email and messaging to streaming video, live sports, and work apps that need steadier bandwidth. Virgin Atlantic said Starlink will support multiple devices at once and activities including streaming, gaming, shopping, work, and brief audio calls. (virginatlantic.com) The competitive pressure is already visible on long-haul routes. Qatar Airways said in January that it had equipped nearly 120 widebody aircraft with Starlink, including its full Airbus A350 fleet and three Boeing 787-8 aircraft, while British Airways owner International Airlines Group said in November 2025 that Starlink rollouts across its airlines would begin in 2026. (qatarairways.com; bloomberg.com) SpaceX’s latest progress report says Starlink added more than 4.6 million active customers in 2025 and expanded into 35 additional countries, territories, and markets that year. Virgin Atlantic’s first Heathrow-to-New York flight in May will test how much of that growth can be turned into a selling point at 35,000 feet. (starlink.com; virginatlantic.com)
