Gun Violence Concerns Rise After NYC Shootings
Renewed concerns about gun violence have emerged in New York City following two separate deadly shootings in the last 48 hours. In the Bronx, a 16-year-old girl was killed by a stray bullet near a school, while two men were killed in a triple shooting in Manhattan.
- The 16-year-old victim in the Bronx was identified as Evette Jeffrey, an honor roll student who wanted to be a nurse. She was riding her scooter and was not involved in the dispute when she was struck in the head by a stray bullet. The shooting occurred after a fight broke out near the Bronx Career and College Preparatory High School in the Morrisania neighborhood. - A 14-year-old boy was arrested and charged with murder, attempted murder, and manslaughter in the death of Evette Jeffrey. Police allege the suspect fired three rounds into a crowd of teens during the altercation. Authorities are reportedly still searching for a 13-year-old who is accused of handing the gun to the alleged shooter. - The Manhattan shooting took place just before midnight near West 207th Street and 10th Avenue in the Inwood neighborhood. A 44-year-old man was shot in the face and a 40-year-old man was shot in the chest; both died from their injuries. A third victim, a 37-year-old man, was shot in the leg and is in stable condition. - Police believe the two men killed in the Inwood shooting were the intended targets. Surveillance video shows the gunman, dressed in all black with a face covering, stepping out from behind a parked car and opening fire. The suspect fled the scene on foot and remains at large. - Despite these incidents, overall shooting incidents in New York City saw a 7.7% drop by the end of 2024 compared to 2023.
