Francis Ngannou Becomes Free Agent

Heavyweight star Francis Ngannou has been released by the PFL and is now a free agent. This sets up a potential bidding war among promotions seeking his services. The move comes as the heavyweight division continues to evolve across multiple organizations.

This is Francis Ngannou's second time hitting free agency in just over three years; he previously left the UFC in January 2023 while holding the heavyweight championship. His departure followed contract disputes where he requested health insurance and sponsorships for all fighters. Ngannou's subsequent deal with the PFL, announced in May 2023, was groundbreaking. It included an equity stake, a role as chairman for PFL Africa, and the freedom to pursue boxing. The contract also guaranteed his opponents a minimum payday of $2 million. During his time with the PFL, Ngannou focused heavily on boxing, competing in two high-profile matches in Saudi Arabia. He lost a controversial split decision to Tyson Fury in October 2023 and was knocked out by Anthony Joshua in March 2024. His tenure in the PFL cage was brief, consisting of a single fight in October 2024 where he knocked out Renan Ferreira in the first round to win the PFL Super Fights heavyweight title. A return to the UFC would present a potential matchup with current heavyweight champion Jon Jones, a fight long-discussed by fans. However, UFC CEO Dana White has previously stated Ngannou would not be welcomed back. Other potential suitors could include Bellator MMA, whose heavyweight champion is Ryan Bader, and ONE Championship, where Oumar "Reug Reug" Kane holds the heavyweight title.
