Drag King show hits Seattle tonight
Kremwerk in Seattle is hosting its "Kings ~ A Drag King Show ~ Lonely Hearts Club" event tonight. The show is part of the venue's ongoing series featuring local drag king performers and diverse artistic talent.
Seattle's drag king scene saw its heyday in the early 2000s, serving as a crucial gathering point for the LGBTQ+ community in the Pacific Northwest. Though often overlooked in mainstream culture, these performers challenge gender norms with masculine swagger and artistic expression, from rock ballads to hair-metal standards. The host venue, Kremwerk, is a queer-centric and trans-owned nightclub complex that opened in 2014. It has since expanded to include the Timbre Room and Cherry, establishing itself as a vital safe space for queer culture and progressive electronic music in the city. The "Kings" show is a recurring series, with past events including a "Queer Prom" theme hosted by local performer Ceasar Hart. These regularly scheduled shows provide a consistent platform for an often underrepresented art form. This event continues a long tradition of drag performance in Seattle, which has been a part of the city's queer history for decades. The first gay-owned bar, The Garden of Allah, opened in 1946 and featured vaudeville and female impersonation shows. Today, the city's LGBTQIA+ scene is centered in the Capitol Hill neighborhood, known for its rainbow-painted crosswalks and numerous queer-friendly establishments.
