Qatar Unveils $11.5B Infrastructure Plan
Qatar’s Public Works Authority, Ashghal, has announced $11.5 billion in new infrastructure projects, including roads, buildings, and service facilities. The investment supports the country's Vision 2030 goals and aims to further establish Doha as a global luxury and business destination.
- This new package of 20 projects is a continuation of the massive infrastructure development that saw Qatar invest an estimated $220-$300 billion in the lead-up to the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which included a $36 billion metro system. - The investment is split into two phases: 12 projects valued at over QR 4.5 billion have already been awarded, with another eight projects worth approximately QR 7 billion set to be tendered. - A significant portion of the awarded contracts focuses on high-profile public buildings, including the redevelopment of Hamad General Hospital, a new postal building in Al Thumama, and refurbishment of the Racing and Equestrian Club. - Contracts have been awarded to Qatari companies to bolster the local private sector, a key goal of the Qatar National Vision 2030 which aims to diversify the economy away from hydrocarbons. - Future projects slated for tender include major strategic initiatives such as the design and construction of two large tunnels—the Southern Strategic Tunnel and the Western Strategic Tunnel—to improve surface and groundwater drainage and mitigate flood risks. - The plan includes public realm enhancements aimed at improving quality of life and attracting visitors, such as the construction of air-conditioned walkways on the Qatar University campus. - This spending is part of the final phase of Qatar National Vision 2030, which aims to transform Qatar into an advanced society with sustainable development and a high standard of living.
