Solid-state EV batteries near production
A US startup cleared technical hurdles for solid-state EV battery production, while MG will launch an SUV with semi-solid-state batteries in Q2 2026.
The US startup, Solid Power, overcame key challenges in scaling its sulfide-based solid-state cell production. This included demonstrating high-speed continuous silicon anode formation and achieving over 75% nickel utilization in its cathodes. MG's new electric SUV, set to launch in Q2 2026, will feature semi-solid-state batteries from China's Ganfeng Innovation. This represents one of the first commercial applications of this technology in a production vehicle. Solid Power's advancements suggest a potential shift towards more energy-dense and safer batteries, reducing reliance on traditional lithium-ion technology. The company plans to begin supplying automotive-quality cells to partners later in 2026 for validation testing.
