A Brazilian Butt Lift is a fat-transfer surgery, and doctors’ warnings about its risks are getting fresh attention as a podcast clip spreads online. (x.com) In the procedure, surgeons remove fat with liposuction and inject it into the buttocks. The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery said in a 2023 safety statement that the operation carries “significant risk” compared with other elective cosmetic surgeries and has produced “deeply concerning levels” of harm and deaths. (isaps.org) The main danger is fat entering large veins and traveling to the lungs, a complication called pulmonary fat embolism. A 2024 paper in *Aesthetic Surgery Journal* said most reported deaths have been linked to that mechanism. (academic.oup.com) The procedure is still widely performed. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons counted 29,466 buttock augmentations with fat grafting by its member surgeons in the United States in 2024, nearly unchanged from 29,383 in 2023. (plasticsurgery.org) Globally, cosmetic surgery volumes have kept rising. The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery said plastic surgeons performed more than 15.8 million surgical aesthetic procedures worldwide in 2023, up 5.5% from the prior year. (isaps.org) Medical groups have spent years trying to make the operation safer rather than eliminate it. A 2023 multi-society statement backed Florida rules requiring fat to be injected only above the gluteal fascia, limiting surgeons to three gluteal fat grafting procedures per day, and requiring ultrasound during injection. (isaps.org) Plastic surgeons’ groups say those changes have altered practice. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons said in July 2025 that Brazilian Butt Lifts were “historically” viewed as risky but that standards and patient preferences had shifted toward smaller-volume contouring. (plasticsurgery.org) Other medical bodies are still pushing for tighter controls. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons called in October 2024 for urgent regulation of Brazilian Butt Lift procedures, saying it was “gravely concerned” by weak oversight. (baaps.org.uk) Britain’s National Health Service issued a warning in December 2024 about low-cost overseas Brazilian Butt Lift offers, citing a rise in patients returning with complications and saying some clinics abroad advertise prices up to 70% lower than in the United Kingdom. (england.nhs.uk) That is the gap the viral clip landed in: a procedure that remains popular, a safety debate that is still active, and a body-contouring market that has not slowed much despite years of warnings.
