Los Angeles a Growing Life Sciences Hub

Los Angeles is positioned as one of California’s fastest-growing life sciences—and by extension, aerospace—hubs, fostering innovation and job creation.

Los Angeles' aerospace sector benefits from its strategic location, skilled workforce, and established infrastructure. The city's aerospace legacy began in the early 20th century, with significant aircraft manufacturing during World War II. This foundation has propelled LA to the forefront of aerospace innovation, encompassing both legacy companies and emerging startups. The rise of "new space" has particularly energized local campuses like USC, where students are pushing boundaries in rocket propulsion. USC's Rocket Propulsion Lab set a new amateur altitude record in 2024 with Aftershock II, reaching 470,000 feet. This activity underscores the region's growing importance in space-related technologies. Several major aerospace companies have a significant presence in Los Angeles, including SpaceX, Boeing, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin and L3Harris Technologies. These companies are involved in various aspects of aerospace, from satellite communications to advanced propulsion systems. The industry's growth is further supported by venture capital investments, with aerospace and defense firms capturing 34% of Los Angeles' $12 billion in venture funding in 2025. The Los Angeles County Economic Development Corp. reported that the county's aerospace and defense industries added 11,000 jobs between 2022 and 2024. These jobs command an average wage of $141,110, which is more than twice the county average. This growth signifies a revitalization of Southern California's space economy, driven by startups pushing technological boundaries.
