Cigna Announces CEO Succession

The Cigna Group announced a major leadership transition. President and COO Brian Evanko will succeed David M. Cordani as Chief Executive Officer on July 1, 2026. Cordani is set to retire from the CEO role and will serve as executive chair of the board.

David Cordani's departure marks the end of a significant era; he has led Cigna as CEO since 2009, making him the longest-tenured chief among major U.S. health insurers. His leadership transformed the company through major strategic shifts, including navigating the Affordable Care Act's implementation. The defining move of Cordani's tenure was the $67 billion acquisition of pharmacy-benefit manager Express Scripts in 2018. This mega-deal dramatically reshaped Cigna by integrating medical coverage with pharmacy services, a move that followed a trend of vertical integration within the healthcare industry. Incoming CEO Brian Evanko is a Cigna veteran, having joined the company in 1998. He has held numerous senior leadership positions, including Chief Financial Officer and, most recently, President and CEO of the Cigna Healthcare division, giving him deep operational knowledge across all business lines. Evanko takes the helm as the company navigates significant industry pressures, including rising medical costs and increased regulatory scrutiny. Cigna is in the midst of rolling out a new transparent, rebate-free model for pharmacy benefits and recently completed the divestiture of its Medicare businesses to focus on more profitable areas. Financially, the company reported strong revenue growth in 2025 and projects an adjusted earnings per share of at least $30.25 for 2026. Evanko's immediate challenge will be to manage investments in the new pharmacy model while maintaining this growth trajectory. Beyond the boardroom, Cordani is an accomplished endurance athlete who has competed in over 125 triathlons. He often participates in events to guide visually impaired runners with organizations like Achilles International, a philanthropic focus he shares with his successor, Evanko, who is also a marathon runner and race guide.
