Microsoft trims Copilot branding

Microsoft is dialing back visible Copilot branding across Windows 11 apps while saying it will keep the underlying AI features and is running a CEO‑led overhaul dubbed a “Copilot code red” to improve execution and investor confidence. Reports note Copilot shortcuts are being replaced by generic menus like “writing tools,” and the company has updated Copilot’s legal framing to remove casual language such as calling it a “game.” (finance.yahoo.com) (moneycontrol.com)

Microsoft is stripping the Copilot name out of some Windows 11 apps even as it keeps the artificial intelligence features underneath. (blogs.windows.com) In a March 20 post, Windows chief Pavan Davuluri said Microsoft would cut “unnecessary Copilot entry points” in apps including Snipping Tool, Photos, Widgets and Notepad. The first visible changes started rolling out to Windows Insiders on April 9. (blogs.windows.com) (windowslatest.com) In Notepad version 11.2512.28.0, the Copilot button was replaced with a pen icon and a menu labeled “Writing Tools.” The rewrite, summarize and text-generation features stayed in place, and the settings label changed from “AI features” to “Advanced features.” (windowslatest.com) (pcmag.com) Snipping Tool changed more sharply. Reports said the app’s Copilot shortcut disappeared, and PCMag reported Microsoft had removed its artificial intelligence tools there entirely. (windowslatest.com) (pcmag.com) Microsoft is making those interface changes while running what outside reports described as a chief executive-led “Copilot code red.” Yahoo Finance, citing BNP Paribas analyst Stefan Slowinski, said investor frustration had grown around Copilot’s limited traction despite Microsoft’s broad software reach. (finance.yahoo.com) Moneycontrol reported on April 11 that Satya Nadella’s internal push is aimed at improving Copilot’s reliability, responsiveness and usability across products. The same report said analyst commentary estimated about 30% of new cloud capacity in the prior quarter was used internally for Copilot and large language model work. (moneycontrol.com) The branding retreat follows two years of expansion. In March 2024, Microsoft was still putting Copilot “front-and-center” in Windows 11 and Windows 365 as part of a wider push to sell artificial intelligence features across its software stack. (cnet.com) Microsoft’s legal language has also become more formal. The current Copilot terms, effective October 24, 2025, call Copilot a “personal AI companion” and define it as a service under the Microsoft Services Agreement; archived terms for Bing’s earlier artificial intelligence experiences used lighter consumer wording about experiences intended to “delight, inspire, and enhance human creativity.” (microsoft.com 1) (microsoft.com 2) The immediate message from Microsoft’s latest Windows changes is narrower than an artificial intelligence pullback. The company is keeping the tools, changing the labels, and trying to make Copilot feel less like a button everywhere and more like a feature that has to earn its place.
