(fox5sandiego.com) MCC spokeswoman Brittney Potes said the Federal Bureau of Investigation was notified. Potes also said Garcia Jacobo had been in custody at the San Diego facility since Sept. 11, 2025. (newsbreak.com) Garcia Jacobo was serving a 24-month federal sentence imposed in the Southern District of California for importation of methamphetamine. A federal judgment in his criminal case shows U.S. District Judge Ruth Bermudez Montenegro entered that sentence on April 18, 2025. (govinfo.gov) The death happened inside a federal jail that holds both male and female inmates in the city center. The Bureau of Prisons lists MCC San Diego at 808 Union Street and reports a population of 594 inmates. (bop.gov) Deaths in federal custody trigger reporting requirements beyond the prison itself. The Bureau of Justice Statistics says its Mortality in Correctional Institutions program collects data on deaths in the custody of local jails, state prisons, and the Federal Bureau of Prisons, with detailed federal reporting in place since 2015. (bjs.ojp.gov) The Justice Department has not released a cause of death for Garcia Jacobo. For now, the public record is limited to the prison’s timeline, the notice to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the fact that he died while serving a two-year federal sentence in San Diego.
