AMD Launches High-End Versal AI Edge Gen 2 FPGA Kit

AMD has launched the VEK385 Versal AI Edge Gen 2 evaluation kit, a high-performance SoC FPGA platform. The $16,000 kit features eight Cortex-A78AE cores, ten Cortex-R52 cores, and 144 AI Engine-ML v2 tiles delivering up to 184 INT8 TOPS. The platform is targeted at demanding applications in automotive ADAS, industrial edge AI, and healthcare imaging, with social media discussion focusing on its price-to-performance ratio and reliance on Vivado development tools.

- The Gen 2 architecture delivers up to 10 times more scalar compute for post-processing and up to 3 times the AI performance per watt compared to the first generation. This efficiency gain is partly achieved through the AIE-ML v2's support for new data types like MX6 and MX9, which are more efficient for certain AI workloads than the standard INT8. - Its single-chip design integrates three distinct processing stages: flexible programmable logic for real-time
