The Global Wellness Institute published its first-ever data on Portugal’s wellness economy on March 19, 2026, in collaboration with the Associação Portuguesa de Ética Empresarial (APEE). (globalwellnessinstitute.org) Portugal recorded 2.49 million inbound wellness trips in 2024, up from 2.05 million in 2019, with international visitors spending an average of $1,349 per trip. (globalwellnessinstitute.org) Per-capita wellness spending in Portugal reached $1,961 in 2024—above the European average of $1,876—and the country’s three largest wellness subsectors were wellness tourism ($5.1 billion), personal care and beauty ($4.2 billion), and physical activity ($3.7 billion). (globalwellnessinstitute.org) Susie Ellis, chair and CEO of the Global Wellness Institute, described the findings as evidence of Portugal’s momentum in nature-and-culture integrated wellness, while Mário Parra da Silva, president of APEE, framed the sector as a convergence point for wellbeing, sustainability and ethical business practice. (globalwellnessinstitute.org) Portuguese operators are blending clinical care with hospitality: Six Senses Douro Valley lists expert-led retreats focused on immunity, longevity, sleep and stress management, and Algarve-based Eden Vale advertises personalized psychiatric and addiction programmes delivered by teams of psychiatrists, psychologists and therapists. (sixsenses.com, edenvalewellness.com) Industry reporting shows luxury eco-resorts are pairing mental-health programming with environmental stewardship through eco-responsive architecture, local sourcing and community engagement—approaches the sector now cites as defining the new standard of luxury hospitality.
