Fremont to Host Holi Festival This Weekend

The FOG (Festival of Globe) Holi event is a collaboration between several community organizations, including the Federation of Indo-Americans (FIA) of Northern California and the Fremont Hindu Temple. These groups work together to host one of the largest Holi celebrations in the Bay Area. Previous FOG Holi festivals at the Washington High School soccer field have drawn significant crowds, with attendance figures reaching over 7,000 people from diverse backgrounds. The event is known for its high-energy atmosphere, featuring non-stop Bollywood music from DJs, and dance performances by local studios. Holi itself is an ancient Hindu festival that celebrates the arrival of spring and signifies the triumph of good over evil. One of the central legends behind the festival is the story of Prahlada, who was saved from a fire by his devotion to Vishnu, while the demoness Holika was consumed by the flames. The celebratory bonfires, known as Holika Dahan, held on the eve of Holi commemorate this victory. The throwing of colored powders, or gulal, is linked to the legend of the Hindu deity Krishna, who playfully applied colors to the face of his consort Radha. This act has evolved into the festival's most recognizable tradition, symbolizing the breaking down of social barriers and the joyful ushering in of the new season. Attendees are often encouraged to wear white to fully experience the vibrant colors. For safety and environmental reasons, the organizers provide organic, skin-friendly, and eco-friendly colors for purchase at the event. To ensure a controlled and enjoyable experience for all participants, outside colors and food are not permitted. The festival is designed to be a family-friendly affair, with free admission for children under the age of four. Beyond the throwing of colors, the event includes a variety of food stalls offering delicious festive treats and ample free parking for attendees.
