Huawei Debuts "SuperPoD" at MWC

At MWC Barcelona 2026, Huawei is presenting its new SuperPoD portfolio to the global market. The lineup includes the Atlas 950 and TaiShan 950 SuperPoD, a series of high-performance computing solutions.

The Atlas 950 SuperPoD is engineered for demanding AI tasks, integrating up to 8,192 Ascend 950DT chips to deliver a staggering 8 EFLOPS in FP8 and 16 EFLOPS in FP4 of computing power. This performance is a significant leap, offering a 17-fold improvement in training performance compared to Huawei's previous Atlas 900 A3 SuperPoD. The entire system, comprising 128 compute and 32 communications cabinets, is linked with all-optical interconnects. A key innovation behind the SuperPoD architecture is Huawei's UnifiedBus (UB) interconnect. The Atlas 950 SuperPoD boasts an interconnect bandwidth of 16 PB/s, which is more than 10 times the entire globe's total peak internet bandwidth. This breakthrough addresses the critical challenge of maintaining high-speed, low-latency connections between thousands of processing units, a major bottleneck in large-scale AI infrastructure. Alongside the AI-focused Atlas 950, Huawei introduced the TaiShan 950 SuperPoD, the industry's first for general-purpose computing. Built on Kunpeng 950 processors, this system is designed to help sectors like finance replace legacy mainframes and mid-range computers, especially when combined with Huawei's distributed GaussDB database. It features up to 16 nodes, 32 processors, and 48 TB of memory. The launch at MWC Barcelona 2026 aligns with the event's major themes of AI infrastructure and the convergence of connectivity and intelligence. As the industry moves from AI experimentation to large-scale deployment, the demand for powerful and scalable computing clusters is surging. Huawei's move also includes making its UnifiedBus 2.0 technical specifications open standards to foster a broader ecosystem. For even larger-scale needs, Huawei has planned the Atlas 950 SuperCluster, which will combine 64 Atlas 950 SuperPoDs. This massive system will feature over 520,000 Ascend 950DT chips working in unison to deliver 524 EFLOPS in FP8. Both the Atlas 950 SuperPoD and the SuperCluster are slated for market release in the fourth quarter of 2026.
