American Airlines will stop giving its elite members free seat assignments and upgrade eligibility on basic economy tickets bought on or after May 18, 2026. (news.aa.com) The airline announced the change on April 9 as part of a broader reset of bag fees and basic economy rules. American said it is “further differentiating” basic economy from standard Main Cabin fares. (news.aa.com) Basic economy is American’s cheapest regular coach fare. It still includes a Main Cabin seat, one carry-on bag, one personal item, snacks, soft drinks and inflight entertainment, but it comes with tighter rules on changes, refunds and extras. (aa.com) Until now, American’s own website said AAdvantage members could choose complimentary seats on basic economy fares based on status, and status members kept higher bag allowances than the fare itself included. (aa.com) Main Cabin works differently. American says Main Cabin customers can choose seats for free when they book, and AAdvantage status members on those fares still get their status-based boarding and bag benefits if those are better. (aa.com) The May 18 change lands after an earlier cut to the same product. American’s agency sales page says basic economy tickets bought on or after December 17, 2025 no longer earn AAdvantage miles or Loyalty Points. (saleslink.aa.com) American also raised checked-bag charges. For domestic basic economy tickets bought on or after May 18, the first checked bag will cost $55 at the airport, or $50 if prepaid online or in the app, and the second will cost $65 at the airport, or $60 prepaid. (news.aa.com) The airline did not remove every status benefit from the cheapest fare. In the same announcement, American said all AAdvantage status members will continue to receive complimentary checked bags on American Airlines flights. (news.aa.com) That leaves a narrower split inside American’s coach cabin: basic economy keeps the lowest entry price, while Main Cabin keeps the seat selection and status perks that frequent flyers used to count on even when booking downmarket.
