Fanless 'MacBook Neo' Rumored
A spec post circulating on social media details a fanless "MacBook Neo" with an A18 Pro chip. The rumored device is said to start at $799 and begin shipping as early as March 11. The post is unconfirmed speculation, but points to strong interest in a more affordable, modern entry-level MacBook.
The use of an A-series system-on-a-chip in a MacBook would be a first for a publicly sold device, though the 2020 Developer Transition Kit did house an A12Z Bionic. This move signals a significant architectural shift, aiming to leverage the A18 Pro's 6-core CPU and 5-core GPU for a new class of entry-level laptops. The A18 Pro, which debuted in the iPhone 16 Pro, is built on an enhanced 3nm process. A fanless design for a new MacBook would follow in the footsteps of the 2015 12-inch MacBook and the 2020 M1 MacBook Air. The original fanless MacBook was discontinued in July 2019, while the M1 MacBook Air demonstrated the viability of silent operation in a powerful package. This design choice hinges on the power efficiency of the ARM-based A18 Pro chip. A potential $599 to $799 price point would position the "MacBook Neo" as the most affordable Apple laptop in years, creating a new entry-level tier. This could be a strategic move to compete with Google Chromebooks and entry-level Windows PCs, particularly in the education market. The current MacBook Air lineup has moved to a higher starting price, leaving a noticeable gap at the sub-$1000 level. Leaked regulatory filings on Apple's own website briefly mentioned the "MacBook Neo" name and the model number A3404 before being removed. This accidental disclosure has fueled much of the speculation. Some reports indicate the device will feature a 13-inch display and come in a variety of colors, similar to the iMac.
