Blume stated VW will launch affordable EVs with high-end tech in 2026, initiating the company's largest product launch campaign specifically for the Chinese market. These EVs will also have key milestones for battery tech, software, and autonomous driving. VW's new entry-level EV architecture, called the A Main Platform, will underpin four new EVs in China starting in 2026. These EVs will range from $20,000 to $23,800 and will be produced through VW's joint ventures with SAIC and FAW. The "A Main Platform" is based on VW's MEB platform but will use local suppliers to cut costs and reduce development time by a third. VW hopes to launch new models in two and a half years instead of the current four. VW's move to affordable EVs is a direct response to losing its best-selling brand title in China to BYD, as Chinese consumers increasingly favor EVs. Nearly half of VW's profits come from China, making this a crucial step for the company.
