OpenAI upgrades Codex control
OpenAI rolled out an upgrade to Codex that gives it more control over the desktop, a step toward more agentic coding workflows that can operate beyond simple prompts. The change was reported as part of OpenAI’s broader push to productise its software stack for deeper desktop integrations. (techcrunch.com)
OpenAI has updated Codex so the coding agent can now operate desktop apps, browse inside the app, and carry out longer chains of work from a desktop client. (openai.com) OpenAI announced the changes on April 16, 2026, saying the updated Codex app for macOS and Windows adds “computer use,” image generation, memory, plugins, and support for reviewing pull requests, multiple files, and multiple terminals. (openai.com) “Computer use” means Codex can see what is on screen and act on it with permission, like a remote coworker using your mouse and keyboard. OpenAI’s developer docs say users must install a Computer Use plugin and grant Screen Recording and Accessibility access before Codex can click, type, and navigate in macOS apps. (developers.openai.com) The release moves Codex beyond code generation inside a chat box and into the rest of a developer’s workflow, including browser previews, Git work, remote development boxes over Secure Shell, and repeatable automations. OpenAI said the app is meant to serve as a “command center” for parallel agent threads and long-running tasks. (openai.com) OpenAI tied the rollout to a broader push to make Codex useful across the software stack instead of only inside an editor window. TechCrunch reported the company is trying to deepen desktop integrations as competition in coding agents intensifies, especially against Anthropic’s Claude Code. (techcrunch.com) The company is also building a plugin layer around Codex. OpenAI’s changelog says plugins can be installed per user or per repository, and Codex surfaces a plugin directory while also supporting local plugin development for teams. (developers.openai.com) Availability is still uneven. OpenAI’s developer site says the Codex app is available on macOS and Windows, while OpenAI’s community post said desktop app interaction was initially macOS-only and that browser integration would reach users in the European Union and United Kingdom shortly after. (developers.openai.com, community.openai.com) OpenAI said ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Edu, and Enterprise plans include Codex, which puts the new desktop controls inside paid ChatGPT tiers rather than a separate developer-only product. The next test is whether developers trust an agent with enough access to click through the rest of their machine, not just write the code. (developers.openai.com, openai.com)
