Sierra LaMar Murder Conviction Overturned

A California court has overturned the murder conviction of the man previously found guilty of killing Sierra LaMar in Morgan Hill. The high-profile case now faces an uncertain legal future, as the specific grounds for the court's decision have not yet been made public.

Sierra LaMar, a 15-year-old sophomore, vanished on March 16, 2012, while walking to her school bus stop in Morgan Hill, California. Although her body was never found, her cell phone was discovered a day later, followed by her bag containing her schoolbooks and the clothes she wore that day. The original case against Antolin Garcia-Torres was built on forensic evidence, as no murder weapon or crime scene was ever established. Investigators found Garcia-Torres' DNA on Sierra's clothing and her DNA inside his car. A rope in his trunk also contained a strand of her hair. In 2017, Garcia-Torres was convicted and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The jury also found him guilty of three separate attempted kidnappings of women in 2009. Prosecutors had argued these earlier incidents were "training" for Sierra's abduction. The conviction was overturned by a state appeals court on February 27, 2026. The court ruled that combining the four cases was an error and prejudiced the jury, describing each of the cases as "weak" on its own. The appellate court's ruling found there was insufficient evidence of "willful, deliberate and premeditated murder or a specific intent to kill." This means if the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office chooses to retry Garcia-Torres, they will be barred from arguing those specific theories of first-degree murder. The District Attorney's office is now weighing its options, which include appealing the decision to the California Supreme Court or proceeding with a new trial under the court's stricter evidence limitations. Garcia-Torres remains in custody while the legal process continues.
