Sharon Marley Drops New Single
Three-time Grammy winner Sharon Marley drops her new single 'Island' today featuring Cedella Marley and Rica Newell. The track celebrates unity and womanhood in roots-reggae style, off her upcoming album 'Firebird' due March 20.
Sharon Marley's musical journey began in her pre-teens with the Melody Makers, a group formed at her father Bob Marley's request. Alongside her siblings Ziggy, Stephen, and Cedella, she contributed to a pop-reggae sound that earned the group three Grammy Awards for the albums "Conscious Party", "One Bright Day", and "Fallen Is Babylon". With the Melody Makers, Sharon and her sister Cedella became the first Jamaican women to earn a Platinum-certified album in the United States with "Conscious Party" in 1991. The album featured hit singles like "Tomorrow People" and "Tumblin' Down". Beyond her own music, Sharon has been a dedicated curator of the Marley family legacy. For 12 years, she served as the curator of the Bob Marley Museum and has been involved with the Rita Marley Foundation and Ghetto Youths United, her brothers' record label. The upcoming album 'Firebird' marks a significant step for Sharon as her first full-length solo project, a milestone over three decades in the making. The album is described as a tribute to her roots and a celebration of resilience, rebirth, and empowerment. One of its earlier singles, "Steppah," features reggae legend Big Youth. The new single "Island" is not just a musical collaboration but also a charitable effort. All streaming proceeds will be donated to Humanity Ova Vanity (HOV), a Canadian-based organization focused on emergency response and community resilience in underserved areas. The title track of the album, "Firebird," was co-produced by her son, Ingemar Prendergast, bridging generations of musical talent. The song was intentionally crafted in the 432 Hz frequency, which is known for its healing properties in sound therapy.
