Subaru targeting niche EV market

Subaru is launching a new Solterra and other EVs, targeting the outdoor, all-wheel-drive market segment rather than competing head-to-head with Tesla reported.

The Solterra aims for the compact SUV market, emphasizing traditional Subaru features like standard all-wheel drive and raised ground clearance. It was developed in partnership with Toyota, sharing a platform with the Toyota bZ4X. Subaru is focusing on enhanced regenerative braking, improved stability, and all-wheel drive to appeal to outdoor enthusiasts. The 2026 Solterra boasts up to 288 miles of range and a new XT model with 338 horsepower. Compared to Tesla's focus on range and charging infrastructure, Subaru prioritizes safety, usability, and dealership support. The Solterra has 8.3 inches of ground clearance, giving it more off-road capability than the Tesla Model Y. The 2026 Solterra features a redesigned interior with premium materials and advanced technology, including a 14-inch multimedia system. Pricing starts at $38,495 for the Premium trim and goes up to $45,855 for the Touring XT Leather.
