Mass Exodus Hits Musk's xAI Venture
Elon Musk's artificial intelligence firm, xAI, has reportedly experienced a mass exodus of its original co-founders and engineers. The departures are attributed to organizational chaos and concerns about AI safety following the company's merger with SpaceX and an aggressive restructuring led by Mr. Musk.
- The recent departures include six of the original twelve co-founders, such as Jimmy Ba, who led AI safety, and Tony Wu, who headed the reasoning team. At least nine engineers have publicly announced their exits in total. - Elon Musk has stated that the departures were not voluntary but were necessary "push" decisions resulting from the company's restructuring to increase execution speed. He has also indicated that xAI is still hiring aggressively. - The exodus follows the February 2, 2026, all-stock acquisition of xAI by SpaceX, which valued the combined entity at $1.25 trillion. This merger is intended to provide xAI with the significant capital required for its large-scale computing needs. - In response to the departures, xAI has been reorganized into four main divisions: the Grok chatbot, a coding systems unit, the "Imagine" video generator, and a new "Macrohard" project aimed at creating AI that can perform any task a computer can. - Prior to the merger, xAI had raised significant funding, including a $6 billion round in May 2024 from investors like Andreessen Horowitz and Sequoia Capital. The company was valued at $250 billion in the SpaceX acquisition deal. - xAI was founded by Musk in March 2023 with the stated goal of "understanding the true nature of the universe." Its primary product is the AI chatbot Grok, designed to be an alternative to what Musk views as politically correct AI models. - Some former employees have expressed concerns that the company is "stuck in the catch-up phase" and that there's a push to develop "unhinged" and "unfiltered" AI, leading to the dissolution of the internal safety team. - The company is also facing regulatory scrutiny after its Grok AI was reportedly used to create nonconsensual deepfakes.
