The University of Bristol says it will open its Mumbai Enterprise Campus in August 2026, its first international campus and one of the first foreign university sites now taking shape in India. (bristol.ac.uk) Bristol won approval from the Indian government in July 2025, when officials presented the university with a Letter of Intent at an event marking five years of India’s National Education Policy 2020. The university said the campus would open in summer 2026. (bristol.ac.uk) The first intake is being capped at about 250 students, according to Bristol and Indian media reports, with the university saying the smaller cohort is meant to support quality in the launch year. (bristol.ac.uk, indianexpress.com) Bristol’s Mumbai site is listing six programmes for 2026 entry: three undergraduate degrees — Data Science, Economics and Data Science, and Economics — and three postgraduate degrees — Finance and Investment, Immersive Arts, and Financial Technology with Data Science. (mumbai.bristol.ac.uk) The campus is set for Cignus Powai near Powai Lake, and Bristol says the site sits inside one of Mumbai’s technology and innovation hubs. The university’s contact page lists the campus address on the 18th floor of Cignus Powai in Mumbai. (bristol.ac.uk, mumbai.bristol.ac.uk) The project is moving under India’s 2023 University Grants Commission rules for foreign higher education institutions, which let eligible overseas universities open campuses in India if they meet ranking or subject-strength thresholds. The rules say teaching in India is supposed to match the standards of the home campus. (education.gov.in, fhei.ugc.ac.in) That policy change has turned Mumbai into a test case for India’s plan to bring more global universities onshore instead of sending students abroad for the same brands and degrees. Indian Express reported this week that five foreign universities are set to begin operations in Mumbai ahead of the coming academic year. (education.gov.in, indianexpress.com) Bristol is also using the Mumbai launch to build local industry ties before classes begin. In February 2026, it announced a strategic partnership with Tata Consultancy Services and said it would also work with Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, ICICI Bank, Supervity AI, the British Council and the Shanta Foundation. (bristol.ac.uk) The Tata Consultancy Services agreement is aimed at artificial intelligence research, live projects, placements and other career pathways for students, according to Bristol. The university also said a £1.5 million gift from the Shanta Foundation would support research and student mobility between India and the United Kingdom. (bristol.ac.uk) Admissions pages for the Mumbai campus say scholarships for 2026-27 will include merit-based and need-based aid, with details to be confirmed over the course of the year. For now, Bristol’s India bet is taking shape as a small first cohort, six degree programmes and a campus opening date that is now down to August 2026. (mumbai.bristol.ac.uk, bristol.ac.uk)
