Fremont Experiences Flooding on President's Day

Heavy rainfall on President's Day caused localized flooding in Fremont and across the East Bay. City officials issued warnings about hazardous driving conditions and urged residents to avoid flooded areas. Emergency services were monitoring the situation as the storm moved through the region.

- The area's primary waterway, Alameda Creek, has a history of significant flooding, with a major event in December 1955 leading to the creation of the Alameda County Flood Control District. That flood inundated 15 square miles of the area after the creek rose 20 feet and breached a levee. - A 12-mile-long flood control channel was constructed along Alameda Creek in the 1970s to protect Fremont, Union City, and Newark. However, heavy siltation has severely reduced its capacity compared to its original design, which was intended to handle a 500-year flood event. - The key transportation route of Niles Canyon Road (State Route 84), which runs along Alameda Creek connecting Fremont and Sunol, is frequently closed due to flooding and landslides. In February 2024, a section of the road collapsed into the creek due to erosion from storm runoff. - Long-term climate projections indicate that a 36-inch sea-level rise by 2100 could permanently flood parts of Fremont, including the Baylands and south Warm Springs areas. This would threaten critical infrastructure such as the Union Pacific railway, dozens of structures, and access to the Dumbarton Bridge via CA-84. - Urban development has significantly altered the natural water flow in the region; the flatlands of Fremont were originally an alluvial fan built from millennia of sediment deposited by Alameda Creek's floods. - While the President's Day event caused localized and minor flooding, the storm system was part of a series of atmospheric rivers impacting the Pacific Coast during the week.
