Bitcoin Battles $70K-$73K Range
Bitcoin is consolidating between $69,000–$73,000 with strong resistance at the psychological $73,000 ceiling after bouncing from ETF inflows and short squeezes on March 5th. Short-term holders moved ~$1.8 billion to exchanges for profit-taking after the recent rally to $74,000, signaling healthy consolidation rather than structural weakness.
The rally to an all-time high above $73,000 in March 2024 was significantly fueled by the launch of spot Bitcoin ETFs in the U.S. on January 10, 2024. These new financial products opened up the cryptocurrency to a broader range of investors and led to a flood of institutional capital into the market. In one three-day period in early March, spot Bitcoin ETFs saw cumulative net inflows of approximately $1.145 billion. Anticipation of the Bitcoin "halving" in April 2024 also bolstered positive market sentiment. This pre-programmed event, which occurs roughly every four years, cuts the reward for mining new blocks in half, thereby reducing the rate at which new bitcoins enter circulation. Historically, these halving events have been followed by significant price surges due to the created supply scarcity. The derivatives market reflected extreme bullishness leading up to the peak. On March 5, the funding rate for perpetual futures contracts surged, indicating that traders in long positions were willing to pay high fees to maintain their bets on rising prices. Open interest in Bitcoin futures also reached a peak of $18.28 billion on March 14, the same day as the price all-time high, signaling a high degree of leverage in the market. Following the peak, a market correction was expected, with the Crypto Fear & Greed Index signaling "extreme greed." Analysts are now watching key technical levels for signs of the next major move. Immediate support is seen around the $66,000 level, while a break below that could lead to a retest of the $60,000-$62,500 zone. Conversely, a sustained break above the current resistance could open a path toward the $79,000 to $83,500 range.
