Boeing adds MAX line
Boeing confirmed plans to open a new 737 MAX production line in Everett, Washington this summer, dubbed the “North Line,” capable of building MAX 8, MAX 9 and MAX 10 variants. (centreforaviation.com) The move comes as Congress prepares to vote on an aviation‑safety bill shaped by last year’s midair collision near Washington, D.C., linking production expansion to an ongoing safety policy debate. Boeing says it will open a new 737 MAX assembly line in Everett, Washington, this summer, expanding production of its best-selling jet. (boeing.com) The new line, called the North Line, will be the first time Boeing has built 737s in Everett. Boeing said it will be able to assemble all 737 MAX models there and will start with the MAX 8, MAX 9 and MAX 10. (boeing.com) Everett has long been Boeing’s widebody factory, while 737 production has been centered in Renton. Boeing said the Everett line will copy the Renton build process, with one added step: a tool that moves partially completed wings for final assembly in Everett. (boeing.com) The timing lands in the middle of a federal safety debate. The House is scheduled to vote Tuesday, April 14, on the Alert Act, a bill written after last year’s midair collision near Washington that killed 67 people. (usnews.com) That bill would require aircraft flying near busy airports to carry systems that show pilots the precise location of nearby aircraft. The Associated Press report carried by U.S. News said key senators and some victims’ families want the House version strengthened before it moves further. (usnews.com) Boeing’s expansion also comes after two years of scrutiny over how it builds the 737 MAX. The Federal Aviation Administration said in December 2024 that audits after the January 5, 2024 door-plug blowout found multiple alleged failures to follow manufacturing quality-control requirements. (faa.gov) That scrutiny led the Federal Aviation Administration to cap 737 MAX output at 38 jets a month in early 2024. CNBC reported the agency raised that cap to 42 a month in October 2025 after additional safety reviews. (cnbc.com) The North Line is part of Boeing’s push to build beyond that level over time. FlightGlobal reported the Everett startup completes a delayed plan first announced in 2023 to add a fourth 737 line after 787 production left open space in Everett in 2021. (flightglobal.com) One detail still hanging over the lineup is the 737 MAX 10, the largest version Boeing says Everett will eventually build. Boeing said the line will start with the MAX 10, but outside reporting says that model is still in certification. (boeing.com) (airdatanews.com) So the Everett opening is both an industrial expansion and a test of Boeing’s argument that it can raise output under tighter oversight. Congress is voting on new safety rules the same day Boeing is asking the market to trust a bigger 737 system. (boeing.com) (usnews.com)
