Boeing Refines KC-46 Software Amid Vision System Delays

Boeing is detailing continued software refinements for its KC-46 tanker program. The updates are being developed as the program continues to face delays with its Remote Vision System (RVS). The ongoing software work highlights the critical role of flight-certified software in complex military aerospace systems.

- The original Remote Vision System (RVS 1.0) was designated a "Category 1" deficiency—the most serious level—due to image distortion, poor depth perception, and imagery being washed out in changing light conditions. These flaws led to boom operators scraping receiving aircraft and experiencing eye strain and headaches. - The redesigned "RVS 2.0" is a complete hardware and software overhaul funded by Boeing, which will replace the original black-and-white cameras with a new system that includes 4K color cameras, 3D displays, a laser rangefinder for distance measurement, and augmented reality overlays. - Fielding for the critical RVS 2.0 fix has been repeatedly pushed back; initially planned for 2023, the schedule slipped to 2025, then 2026, with the current projection now targeting the summer of 2027. Boeing began flight trials of the new system in November 2025. - While Boeing is covering the cost of the RVS 2.0 redesign, the company has absorbed over $7 billion in total cost overruns to fix various issues on the fixed-price KC-46 contract. - Beyond the vision system, the tanker program has five outstanding Category 1 deficiencies, including a boom that is too stiff to refuel the A-10 Warthog. - The U.S. Air Force has had to repeatedly halt KC-46 deliveries. A recent pause occurred in February 2025 after cracks were discovered on the "outboard fixed fixed-trailing-edge support structure" of two brand-new aircraft awaiting handover. - In July 2024, the Air Force awarded Boeing a $16.8 million contract for software enhancements unrelated to the RVS, focusing on the Onboard Performance Tool to improve cargo loading calculations and flight planning data management.
