Costly Accessibility Bug Hits AI Firm

An accessibility audit at Harvey AI uncovered severe focus management issues in its Vue.js modals, requiring a $250,000 fix. The incident serves as a stark example of the high technical and financial costs of retrofitting accessibility into complex web platforms.

The Department of Justice's new Title II rule mandates that all digital content from public colleges and universities, including websites and mobile apps, must meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA. The deadline for institutions serving populations of 50,000 or more is April 24, 2026, creating a significant driver for accessibility initiatives. For smaller public entities, the compliance deadline is April 26, 2027. This impending deadline is critical as higher education is a frequent target for accessibility lawsuits. Settlements in such cases against universities have ranged from $100,000 to over $8 million, demonstrating the significant financial risk of non-compliance. These legal actions often result in court orders requiring the digital content to be fixed anyway, adding remediation costs on top of legal fees and settlements. The technical issues mentioned at Harvey AI, specifically with Vue.js modals, highlight common challenges in modern web development. Frameworks like Vue.js present their own accessibility hurdles, with focus management being a frequently overlooked but critical issue, especially for users who rely on keyboard navigation or screen readers. Proactively integrating accessibility from the start of a project is far more cost-effective than retrofitting. Implementing accessibility from the ground up can add as little as 10% to development costs, whereas retrofitting an existing platform can cost up to 25% of the original development expense. One report suggests fixing accessibility issues during development is ten times cheaper than addressing them after a product has launched.
