Logistics Giants Overhaul Digital Infrastructure

Major logistics firms are making significant investments to modernize their digital and physical infrastructure. Maersk's APM Terminals and Eurogate are in talks to invest €1B to upgrade Germany's Bremerhaven container terminal. Meanwhile, CEVA Logistics is partnering with API management firm WSO2 to overhaul its entire digital backbone, reinforcing the move toward API-first architectures in the supply chain.

- The Bremerhaven terminal upgrade aims to increase annual throughput capacity by 1 million TEU to 4 million TEU and achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions through electrification, a first for a German terminal. Maersk CEO Vincent Clerc highlighted the goal of making the terminal one of the most competitive in Northern Europe to strengthen supply chain resilience for the German economy. The project's success is also linked to the planned deepening of the Outer Weser river, a critical step to accommodate larger vessels. - CEVA Logistics' partnership with WSO2 is designed to consolidate a fragmented IT landscape, breaking down operational silos across four previously independent business units. The unified platform now handles over 300 million API transactions monthly across more than 800 APIs, powering core functions like order management and shipment tracking. For specialized needs, CEVA employs WSO2's Kubernetes Gateway to create isolated gateways that align with a microservices architecture. - The shift to API-first architectures in logistics enables real-time data exchange, which is critical for visibility in complex supply chains where only 24% of companies report having a clear view of most of their shipments. This approach allows for modularity, where companies can integrate best-of-breed solutions for functions like inventory management or warehouse automation without overhauling entire legacy systems. - Organizing a platform team for an API-first transition often involves treating the platform as an internal product, with a dedicated product owner, 3-6 platform engineers, and a part-time security lead. This structure moves away from organizing by technology stack (e.g., a Kubernetes team) and toward cross-functional teams that own a complete developer experience, such as "New Service Creation". - Key metrics for measuring the success of an internal developer platform include the DORA metrics (Deployment Frequency, Lead Time for Changes, Mean Time to Recovery, Change Failure Rate) and the SPACE framework, which covers Satisfaction, Performance, Activity, Communication, and Efficiency. For new platforms, early success indicators are often reduced onboarding time for new engineers and faster end-to-end service creation time. - The integration of AI and Machine Learning through APIs is moving logistics from passive, transactional data exchange to proactive, predictive operations. Companies like Raft AI use Natural Language Processing (NLP) to automate the extraction of data from shipping documents, while other platforms use ML models for demand forecasting, route optimization, and predictive maintenance. This allows systems to anticipate disruptions and automate responses, such as rerouting inventory, without manual intervention. - From a market perspective, investment in logistics technology remains strong, driven by the need for visibility and efficiency. Between Q1 2020 and Q3 2024, investors committed $718 billion to the sector. While M&A activity has recently been buoyed by distressed sales of early-stage companies that struggled to raise follow-on funding, growth equity invested in the sector has rebounded, up 84.4% year-over-year in early 2025. - For large-scale API migrations like CEVA's, architectural patterns such as the API Gateway are essential for managing the transition with zero downtime. This allows for strategies like shadow testing, where the new API is validated with real production traffic without impacting users, and phased rollouts using the strangler fig pattern to incrementally replace parts of the old system. A critical requirement for such projects is the ability to roll back to the legacy system in under 30 seconds.
