Burbanks Bites and Billiards on Bascom Avenue in San Jose was hit by a break-in early Sunday, according to co-owner Daniel Ramirez, who said two people smashed into the business at about 6:30 a.m. Video shared by the business shows the suspects forcing their way into the bar and grill and getting into a safe, Ramirez told NBC Bay Area. He said the burglary left the business with about $10,000 in losses when stolen cash and property damage were combined. Ramirez said it was the sixth break-in at the business in the two years since it opened. ### How did the break-in unfold at the Bascom Avenue bar? Daniel Ramirez told NBC Bay Area that surveillance video shows two people smashing their way into Burbanks Bites and Billiards on Sunday morning. The suspects entered the bar and grill and reached the safe, he said. The $10,000 figure Ramirez gave NBC Bay Area covered both the money taken and the damage left behind. “The cash I have in there is to pay people, vendors,” Ramirez said, adding that he had to cover those costs out of pocket. (nbcbayarea.com) He said earlier break-ins involved stolen liquor bottles, while this time the burglars got into the safe. Businesses near the Bascom Avenue site told NBC Bay Area they have also been hit. (nbcbayarea.com) The taco business next door said it had been broken into several times over the last couple of years, and Ramirez said repeated incidents were “starting to become a normal thing.” ### Are other Bascom Avenue businesses dealing with similar crimes? (nbcbayarea.com) Hype Liquors, also on Bascom Avenue in San Jose, was broken into in March 2025, NBC Bay Area reported. Co-owner Gourav Singh said thieves used a car to pull out the store’s doors, then took merchandise worth about $20,000 to $30,000. NBC Bay Area reported at the time that other San Jose liquor stores, including Lion Liquor and New Aborn Liquors, had also been hit in the same period. (nbcbayarea.com) Singh said his store had been targeted multiple times. Voyager Craft Coffee, a San Jose-founded chain, said in September 2025 that repeated break-ins had pushed it to stop taking cash. (nbcbayarea.com) Owner Sameer Shah told KRON4 the company had been broken into more than 20 times in 10 years, including three times in three weeks before the policy change. ### What are the owners and local officials saying now? (nbcbayarea.com) Ramirez said he has already added cameras after the latest burglary. He told NBC Bay Area he is also considering interior security gates so would-be burglars see barriers as soon as they look through the windows. NBC Bay Area said Ramirez filed a police report after the break-in. (kron4.com) The station said San Jose police had not responded to its request for comment. Michael Mulcahy, the San Jose City Council member for District 6, said in a statement carried by NBC Bay Area that his office would work to make sure the incident and the surrounding area received attention. (nbcbayarea.com) The City of San José identifies Mulcahy as the councilmember for District 6, which includes the Bascom corridor area cited in the report. ### What happens next for the business? A police report has been filed, Ramirez told NBC Bay Area, and the business is moving ahead with additional security measures. He said the latest loss affected money set aside for payroll and vendors, adding urgency to those changes. District 6’s city webpage lists Mulcahy’s office as the local council office for the area, and his office said it would work to bring attention to the incident. (nbcbayarea.com) For Burbanks Bites and Billiards, the next steps are the police report, added cameras and possible interior gates at the Bascom Avenue location. (sanjoseca.gov)
