Belgium Seizes Russian "Shadow Fleet" Tanker
Belgium's military seized a Russian "shadow fleet" oil tanker in the North Sea, with support from the French navy. The operation is a direct move to enforce sanctions and disrupt Russia's illicit energy trade operations.
The seized tanker, identified as the "Ethera," was intercepted in Belgium's exclusive economic zone in the North Sea during a mission codenamed "Operation Blue Intruder". Belgian special forces boarded the vessel with air support from two French NH90 helicopters. The ship is now being escorted to the Belgian port of Zeebrugge, where it will be formally seized. The "Ethera" was found to be sailing under a false flag of Guinea, with forged ship documents, and its Russian captain is currently being questioned by investigators. This 2008-built product tanker has been on the European Union's sanction list since October 2025 and was also sanctioned by the United States in July of the same year. The vessel is linked to a broader Iranian maritime network, reportedly controlled by the son of a former senior political advisor to Iran's Supreme Leader. This operation highlights a tougher stance by European nations against Russia's "shadow fleet," a collection of hundreds of aging tankers with opaque ownership used to bypass Western sanctions on Russian oil exports. Estimates on the size of this fleet vary, with some sources suggesting it could be as large as 1,100 to 1,400 vessels. These ships often operate with substandard insurance and engage in deceptive practices like turning off their location transponders. The European Union has prohibited the import of seaborne crude oil and petroleum products from Russia. These sanctions, implemented in response to the invasion of Ukraine, are designed to cut off a significant source of revenue for Moscow's war effort. In 2021, prior to the full-scale invasion, the EU imported €71 billion worth of oil from Russia. This seizure is not an isolated incident. In January, French forces intercepted another suspected Russian shadow fleet tanker named the "Grinch" in the Mediterranean. The United States has also been active in seizing tankers involved in illicit trades, signaling a growing international effort to disrupt these clandestine networks. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy praised the Belgian and French action, urging other partners to take similar resolute measures.
