Oxford Jazz Debut March 6
The Oxford University Jazz Scheme will make its public debut on March 6 with flautist Gareth Lockrane, while NEVARIS showcased hypnotic sax-driven live "Remedy".
The new Oxford University Jazz Scheme is supported by the university's Faculty of Music and makes its debut with three distinct student groups: the Jazz Collective, Studio Combo, and Session Band. The inaugural concert's program will feature music from Wayne Shorter's album 'Speak No Evil,' pieces from Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, and original compositions by Gareth Lockrane. Gareth Lockrane is an award-winning flautist, composer, and a prominent figure in UK jazz education, leading the junior jazz course at the Royal Academy of Music. His work extends to film, having been a featured soloist on the soundtracks for movies such as the political satire "The Laundromat" and the star-studded "Don't Look Up". While the Jazz Scheme is new, Oxford has a long-standing jazz history through groups like the Oxford University Jazz Society (JazzSoc), which has existed in various forms since the 1950s, and the premier student-led big band, the Oxford University Jazz Orchestra (OUJO), founded in 1991. NEVARIS is the creative project of New York-based percussionist Agustín Nevaris. The track "Remedy-live" is a preview of the forthcoming "SoundSession" EP, which features a collaboration with renowned bassist and producer Bill Laswell. The sound of NEVARIS blends a wide range of genres, described as a mix of Afro-Latin, dub, funk, jazz, and psychedelia. The live studio video for "Remedy" was filmed by Michael Black and recorded by James Dellatacoma.
