Aer Lingus is cutting more than 500 flights in the coming weeks after pulling aircraft for mandatory maintenance during the start of its summer schedule. (thejournal.ie) The airline said the cancellations were required because of aircraft maintenance, with a “limited number” of wider schedule adjustments. Aer Lingus said the “vast majority” of affected customers will be moved onto same-day services. (thejournal.ie) The cuts begin from April 21, 2026 on multiple routes and run as late as October 24 on some transatlantic services, according to trade guidance reported by TravelExtra. Seattle, San Francisco, Minneapolis and Toronto are among the long-haul routes facing reductions. (travelextra.ie) Short-haul routes from Dublin are also being trimmed on selected dates, including Heathrow, Berlin, Malaga and Amsterdam, while Cork and Shannon services are also affected. Extra.ie reported internal documents pointed to additional disruption on routes touching Athens, Faro, Zurich, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Manchester and Newcastle. (travelextra.ie) (extra.ie) The timing is awkward for Aer Lingus because the carrier spent late 2025 selling summer 2026 as an expansion year. In September, it announced its “largest ever” transatlantic summer schedule, including a new Dublin-Raleigh-Durham route and extra frequencies to New York, Boston, Nashville, Indianapolis and Orlando. (mediacentre.aerlingus.com) In December, Aer Lingus added five new European routes for summer 2026 and a new Dublin-Pittsburgh service starting May 25. That left the airline trying to grow while also taking aircraft out of service for maintenance. (mediacentre.aerlingus.com) The maintenance problem lands in a market where spare aircraft are hard to find. The International Air Transport Association said aircraft deliveries fell to 1,254 in 2024, about 30% below pre-Covid peaks, while the global backlog rose to a record 17,000 jets. (iata.org) IATA has also said delayed deliveries, maintenance backlogs and labor shortages are limiting how fast airlines can add seats in 2026. In a separate supply-chain update, the group said more than 5,000 aircraft were in storage for all reasons, one of the highest levels on record. (iata.org 1) (iata.org 2) Passengers booked on cancelled Aer Lingus flights are being offered rerouting, fee-free date changes or refunds, with automatic reaccommodation on same-day or adjacent-day flights in many cases. The immediate test now is whether those rebookings hold once summer demand builds from late April into May. (travelextra.ie)
