Victorinox and JBS USA Form Partnership

In an unusual pairing, Swiss Army Knife maker Victorinox and meat processing giant JBS USA have formed a strategic partnership. The collaboration will leverage Victorinox's engineering expertise to pursue operational performance and yield optimization in the food industry.

This partnership will involve a direct purchasing relationship, allowing JBS USA to source tools directly from Victorinox, and will also focus on co-developing new products specifically for modern food processing facilities. The collaboration aims to enhance support at the individual plant level and refine product design to meet the industry's evolving operational needs. The collaboration comes as JBS USA is making substantial investments in its facilities to improve efficiency and increase production capacity. The company has recently invested hundreds of millions of dollars in its U.S. beef plants, including the construction of new, state-of-the-art fabrication floors and expanded ground beef processing rooms. For Victorinox, this venture leverages its growing focus on technology-embedded tools for industrial applications. The company recently launched commercial knives with laser-engraved DataMatrix-Codes (DMC) that allow for precise tracking of the tool's lifecycle, including usage, cleaning cycles, and maintenance history. This technology is designed to enhance hygiene, traceability, and operational efficiency in demanding environments like meat processing plants. "Yield optimization" is a critical challenge in the meat industry, where maximizing the amount of sellable product from each carcass is essential for profitability. Factors like the natural variability in animal sizes and strict regulations make this a complex process. JBS has previously invested in automation, robotics, and AI to address this, using x-rays and 3D modeling to guide robotic cutters for more precise and consistent processing. The partnership aims to combine JBS's large-scale processing experience with Victorinox's precision engineering and supply chain expertise. According to Jerson Nascimento, Chief Procurement Officer at JBS USA, the goal is to strengthen their ability to deliver "best-in-class tools with an aim toward maximizing yields at the plant level." Victorinox's President for North America, Ulrich Wohn, noted the opportunity to apply their high level of service, logistics, and inventory management to create greater value for JBS. While known for its iconic Swiss Army Knives, Victorinox has a significant professional cutlery division and has invested heavily in automating its own logistics. The company centralized 17 warehouses into a single, highly automated distribution center to increase efficiency and cut costs, demonstrating a deep understanding of complex supply chain management.
