Shopify's Future: Agentic Commerce
Shopify's CFO notes that "agentic commerce" (fully autonomous AI-driven transactions) is still in its infancy but is a space to watch.
Shopify's "agentic commerce" vision involves AI agents handling the entire purchasing journey, from product discovery to checkout. The customer shifts from active browser to "smart delegator," letting AI find, compare, and buy products. Shopify is building infrastructure for this, including a product catalog for AI queries, a universal cart, and an embedded checkout. They're partnering with OpenAI and others to integrate this into AI platforms like ChatGPT. However, Shopify is also implementing restrictions, mandating human review for AI-driven purchases. This is to maintain control over payment processing and reduce fraud risks. Fully autonomous checkouts are prohibited. Shopify's CEO says they're making every store "agent-ready by default". They're providing the tools to connect merchants with AI, even for those not using Shopify as their primary platform.
