Amazon Bets $21B More on Spain's AI Cloud
Amazon is doubling down on its European cloud infrastructure, announcing an additional $21 billion investment in Spain for data centers and AI. The move signals the hyperscalers' continued dominance in providing the foundational layer for the AI boom. For SaaS founders, it means that while AI infrastructure remains competitive, the costs of building on these platforms will likely continue to rise.
This new $21 billion from Amazon boosts its total investment in Spain to €33.7 billion, aimed at expanding its AWS data centers in the Aragon region. The investment is projected to contribute €21.6 billion to Spain's GDP by 2033 and support an estimated 17,500 jobs annually in local businesses. The massive capital injection is a direct response to the surging demand for generative AI and cloud computing capabilities across Europe. This move helps Amazon meet data sovereignty requirements by allowing European companies to process and store sensitive information within EU borders. The announcement was made at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona after a meeting between Amazon's chief global affairs and legal officer, David Zapolsky, and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. This positions Spain as Amazon's primary AI hub in Southern Europe. The expansion in Aragon will include new facilities like a server manufacturing plant and a dedicated AI and machine learning server repair center. Amazon has also committed to running these data centers on 100% renewable energy. The investment intensifies the "hyperscaler wars" in Europe, putting pressure on competitors like Microsoft and Google to increase their own AI infrastructure spending on the continent. Microsoft recently announced a $2.1 billion investment in its own AI and cloud infrastructure in Spain, with new data centers planned for Madrid and Aragon. Meanwhile, both Microsoft and Google have collectively pledged over $16 billion for AI expansion in other parts of Europe.
