Gallery Exhibition Openings

Mindy Solomon Gallery's new exhibitions opened March 7 from 6-8:30pm. ACCI Gallery announced open calls for "Sound in Visions: Music is the Muse" (apply by March 22) and "Morsels: Tiny Bites of Delectable Art" (March 28-April 26).

Mindy Solomon Gallery, which opened in 2009, will be showcasing a diverse group of artists. Among them is Jack Kabangu, a self-taught Zambian artist based in Copenhagen whose vibrant, energetic paintings are influenced by his African heritage, hip-hop, and urban life, drawing comparisons to Jean-Michel Basquiat. Also featured is Natalia Arbelaez, a Colombian American ceramicist whose work delves into the histories of Latin American, Amerindian, and women of color. Arbelaez has an extensive exhibition history and has held residencies at prestigious institutions such as Harvard University and the Museum of Art and Design in New York. The exhibitions also include works by Daniela Gomez Paz and Sydnie Jimenez. Gomez Paz is a Colombian-American mixed-media artist who explores themes of the body, nature, and femininity through a combination of textile elements, painting, and sculpture. Jimenez is a ceramic artist who focuses on the representation of Black and brown youth, viewing self-expression as a form of protest and empowerment. ACCI Gallery in Berkeley, the oldest artist cooperative on the West Coast, has a long history of supporting artists and craftspeople since its founding in 1959. The gallery is member-owned and operated, and it serves as a vital hub for the local arts community. The open call for "Sound in Visions: Music is the Muse" invites artists to explore the symbiotic relationship between auditory and visual art, a theme that has been explored by artists like Matisse and Kandinsky. The exhibition will feature works influenced by, depicting, or incorporating elements associated with music and musicians. ACCI's other open call is for "Morsels: Tiny Bites of Delectable Art," an exhibition of small-scale artworks. Both juried shows are open to artists nationally across all mediums. For selected artists, the gallery takes a 50% commission on sales.
