The GT500KR, meaning "King of the Road," was a higher-performance version of the GT500, equipped with a 428 Cobra Jet engine. Ford initially underrated the engine's horsepower at 335 hp, though it was likely closer to 400 hp. Only 1,053 fastback models were produced in 1968. This particular GT500KR was completed on July 22nd and was ordered with Lime Gold paintwork and black luxury upholstery. It also features a 428ci Cobra Jet V8 linked with a four-speed manual transmission and a 3.50 Traction-Lok differential. The car is believed to have remained registered on the East Coast since new. After being acquired from its previous owner in 2022, the wheels were replaced and the engine was rebuilt by Abacus Racing. Following the rebuild, the engine produced 322.1 horsepower and 422.4 lb-ft of torque on a chassis dynamometer. The selling dealer installed the two-spoke woodgrain steering wheel on the tilt-away column in preparation for the sale. Values for the 1968 Shelby Mustang GT500KR can vary widely depending on condition, mileage, and originality. Examples in good condition can fetch around $127,500, but the highest recorded sale was $495,000 for a GT500KR on January 25, 2025. The most recent auction sale was on March 6, 2026, for $263,200.
