Adidas launches hybrid fitness racing shoe
Adidas introduced the Adizero Dropset Elite, the brand's first shoe purpose-built for hybrid fitness racing, designed for athletes who blend running, lifting, and functional training in a single workout. The shoe features versatile sole and adaptive cushioning to eliminate the need for multiple pairs during hybrid training competitions.
The Adizero Dropset Elite was co-developed with elite hybrid athletes, including two-time HYROX world champion Tim Wenisch. This collaboration aimed to address the longstanding compromise athletes faced between cushioned running shoes and stable training shoes. The shoe was tested in competition before its public release, with Wenisch winning the HYROX Elite 15 Male Singles in Melbourne in December 2025 while wearing them. This shoe merges technology from two of Adidas's leading footwear lines: the speed-focused Adizero range and the functional strength-training Dropset family. It incorporates Lightstrike Pro foam for lightweight energy return, the same foam used in shoes that have powered 29 world records. For stability during movements like wall balls, an "Energy Rim" wraps around the midsole to guide the foot. A key design feature is the Continental™ rubber outsole, specifically engineered with a diamond pattern for grip on varied indoor surfaces, including the carpeted floors common in hybrid races. The shoe also has a 12mm heel-to-toe drop, designed to promote a more efficient body position during functional movements like sandbag lunges. The launch marks Adidas's deeper push into the rapidly growing sport of hybrid fitness racing. Events like HYROX, which combine set running distances with functional workout stations, have grown from a niche European circuit to a global phenomenon. This new shoe places Adidas in direct competition with brands like Puma, which has a multi-year partnership with HYROX, and Reebok, a long-time affiliate of CrossFit. The Adizero Dropset Elite will be available from March 18th with a premium price point of €275, targeting serious performance-focused athletes. This release is part of a broader strategy that includes a long-term partnership with ATHX, another hybrid competition organizer, to expand the "Ultimate Fitness Experience" to more locations.
