San Francisco's Top Urban Trails Highlighted

A new guide from professional hikers details eight of San Francisco's best urban walking trails. The list includes a range of options from short, scenic strolls to longer city-crossing treks, offering family-friendly and stroller-friendly ideas for Bay Area day trips.

Many of San Francisco's celebrated urban trails are easily accessible for a day trip from Fremont, with a typical drive to the Golden Gate Bridge area taking about an hour without significant traffic. This makes the city's scenic hikes a feasible weekend adventure for the whole family. One of the most family-friendly options is the Presidio Promenade Trail, a paved 4.5-mile route that is largely accessible to strollers. This trail connects the Lombard Gate to the Golden Gate Bridge, passing by notable sights such as a life-sized Yoda statue at the Letterman Digital Arts Center, the Walt Disney Family Museum, and the new Presidio Tunnel Tops park with its large playground. For more rugged, coastal views, the Lands End Trail offers dramatic scenes of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Pacific Ocean. The trail's starting point is near the ruins of the Sutro Baths, a massive public saltwater swimming complex that opened in 1896 and was destroyed by fire in 1966. Beyond the most popular routes, San Francisco is home to a 17-mile Crosstown Trail that connects the city's southeast and northwest corners. This trail is a fantastic way to discover hidden parks, tiled staircases, and community gardens that are often missed by visitors. The trail is divided into several sections, allowing for shorter, more manageable hikes. For a truly unique urban hiking experience, the Mount Sutro Open Space Reserve offers a dense forest of eucalyptus trees that can make you feel miles away from the city. Another hidden gem is McLaren Park, the city's second-largest park, which features the Philosopher's Way, a 2.7-mile loop with stone markers inscribed with thought-provoking quotes.
